The Government has now admitted that a high percentage of children are not achieving the
required national standards in reading. It is also a fact however that the majority
of children could read dramatically better. This will improve their confidence and
give them a competitive advantage in all aspects of their education and in every subject.The Commons Education Select Committee
report in April 2005 has, according to Louise Nyman the founder of Read UK "left
parents wondering whether or not their child is fulfilling their potential and has
reminded parents that they have to take responsibility to ensure that their child is not

Ruth Kelly who was the Secretary for Education at the time
said in March 2006 - "I am clear that synthetic phonics should be the first strategy
in teaching all children to read." The Rose Report which advocates synthetic phonics is now being implemented
nationwide.
